The goal of the Scientific Research and Experimental Development (SR&ED) tax incentives program is to encourage businesses in Canada to engage in research and development (R&D) activities by offering them financial benefits. These incentives are available to corporations, individuals, trusts, and partnerships conducting SR&ED work within Canada. The primary benefits include the ability to claim a deduction against income and earn an Investment Tax Credit (ITC) that can be applied against income tax payable. The ITC can be at a basic rate of 15%, with some corporations eligible for an enhanced rate of 35%. Additionally, some businesses may receive a refundable ITC. The program is structured to allow participants to calculate their allowable SR&ED expenditures and use these to reduce their net income for the current or future tax years. Partnerships involved in SR&ED can allocate the ITC earned to their eligible partners. HEAL Initiative: Team Research for Initial Translational Efforts in Non-addictive Analgesic Therapeutics Development [Small Molecules and Biologics] (U19 Clinical Trial Not Allowed)
This funding opportunity announcement (FOA) is part of a suite of FOAs to support the development of safe, effective, and non-addictive therapeutics to treat pain. The goal of this FOA is to support team-based research projects to develop assays, screening and early optimization work to develop a non-addictive therapeutic to treat pain. Discovery and validation of pharmacodynamic markers efficacy and pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic (PK/PD) studies are also responsive. The result of the project should be to advance a hit or lead to the point where they can meet the entry criteria for RFA-NS-21-010 HEAL Initiative: Non-addictive Analgesic Therapeutics Development [Small Molecules and Biologics] to Treat Pain (UG3/UH3 Clinical Trial Optional) within the 5 years of the award. Applications should propose a plan that will lead to the development of analgesics with a rigorous biological rationale and scientifically sound assays. If the data does not currently exist, the proposal must include a strong plan for developing data linking the putative therapeutic target(s) to the proposed pain indication and supporting the hypothesis that altering the target activity will produce desirable outcomes for the disease. This FOA is not specific for any one or group of pain conditions. Projects to develop therapeutics for acute pain, chronic pain, painful neuropathy, musculoskeletal pain, headache disorders, osteoarthritis, diabetic neuropathy, chemotherapy-induced neuropathy, eye pain, sickle-cell pain, post-surgical pain, cancer pain, visceral pain, obstetric pain, gynecologic pain, post stroke pain, myofascial pain, painful disorders of the orofacial region and other conditions will be considered.

The National Cancer Institute (NCI) intends to support a new initiative, the Targeting Fusion Oncoproteins in Childhood Cancers (TFCC) Network, for the purpose of identifying and developing novel treatment strategies for childhood cancer fusion oncoproteins. The TFCC will have two components: (1) UM1 Next Generation Chemistry Centers (NGC) for Fusion Oncoproteins, which will focus on combining innovative chemical biology technologies and chemoproteomic approaches to target fusion-driven cancers; and (2) U01 research projects focused on molecular mechanisms by which fusion oncoproteins drive pediatric cancers with the goals of identifying potential drug targets and understanding their mechanistic underpinnings on disease formation.. Up to four (4) Research Centers and one (1) Coordination Center will be funded as part of the ACCERT ConsortiumÔř?s effort to address the impact of social determinants of health (SDOH) on adverse cancer control outcomes.. Team Grant: Strengthening the Health Workforce for System Transformation
Canada is facing substantial health workforce challenges that threaten the ability of the system to provide timely, equitable, accessible, quality services and care to Canadians. These workforce challenges have been longstanding and stem from an outdated health system that is fragmented, siloed, lacking in accountability, and poorly organized to meet today's population and health workforce needs.. . The health workforce challenges reflect a combination of factors characteristic of an unorganized and fragmented system. These challenges include supply shortages, sub-optimal capacity planning, inequitable workforce utilization and distribution, governance and funding models that do not support care coordination or interprofessional team-based care, lack of system support to respond to provider distress and burnout, and lack of interoperable data standards and systems.. . The COVID-19 pandemic has further exacerbated such factors with certain regions, populations, and communities experiencing disproportionate impacts. Resulting consequences include recruitment and retention challenges, increasingly unsafe work conditions affecting the physical and mental health of the workforce, lack of access to primary care, overcrowded emergency departments, inequitable access to care, and suboptimal health system performance and outcomes. COVID-19 further highlighted systemic challenges within the Canadian health system (e.g., structural racism, gender inequities, and issues with diversity and inclusion of equity-seeking groups within the workforce) and drew attention to the glaring inequities experienced by health workers and, interconnectedly, the populations receiving care. Additionally, Indigenous Peoples and health workers face unique challenges related to colonialism, social exclusion, and racism that have led to poorer care experiences and outcomes, lack of physical and cultural safety, and barriers for entry into the health workforce.. . To address the current health workforce crisis, Health Canada commissioned the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences (CAHS) to undertake an evidence-based assessment to provide policy and decision-makers with pathways to inform strategies to address the health workforce crisis.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), invites grant applications for Training Project Grants (TPGs) that are focused on occupational safety and health training. NIOSH is mandated to provide an adequate supply of qualified personnel to carry out the purposes of the Occupational Safety and Health Act, and the TPGs are one of the principal means for meeting this mandate. The majority of TPGs are in academic institutions that provide high quality training in the core occupational safety and health disciplines of industrial hygiene (IH), occupational health nursing (OHN), occupational medicine residency (OMR), occupational safety (OS), as well as allied disciplines. This funding opportunity will continue to encourage supportive research environments for Indigenous health research driven by and grounded in Indigenous communities in Canada through the NEIHR Centres. Indigenous communities are broadly defined as individuals, groups, organizations, and populations who self-identify as Indigenous (First Nations, Inuit and/or Métis) living and working anywhere in Canada.. . The NEIHR Centres continue to grow overall awareness, and capacity to advance health research that is relevant to Indigenous Peoples' cultures, values, and beliefs; and is inclusive of active community members contributing to health research. Through this funding opportunity announcement (FOA), the National Cancer Institute (NCI) invites applications for P50 Research Center Grants for Specialized Programs of Research Excellence (SPORE). The program will fund P50 SPORE grants to support state-of-the-art investigator-initiated translational research that will contribute to improved prevention, early detection, diagnosis, and treatment of an organ-specific cancer or a highly related group of cancers. For the purpose of this FOA, a group of highly related cancers are those that are derived from the same organ system, such as gastrointestinal, neuroendocrine, head and neck, and other cancers. Other programmatically appropriate groups of cancers may include those centered around a common biological mechanism critical for promoting tumorigenesis and/or cancer progression in organ sites that belong to different organ systems. For example, a SPORE may focus on cancers caused by the same infectious agent or cancers promoted and sustained by dysregulation of a common signaling pathway. In addition, a SPORE may focus on cross-cutting themes such as pediatric cancers or cancer health disparities. The research supported through this program must be translational and must stem from research on human biology using cellular, molecular, structural, biochemical, and/or genetic experimental approaches. SPORE projects must have the goal of reaching a translational human endpoint within the project period of the grant.

The Division of Blood Diseases and Resources within the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) intends to promote a new initiative by publishing a Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) to solicit applications for the following: Generate an Intergenerational Precision Medicine Resource for the Study of Factor VIII Immunogenicity in Severe Hemophilia A: Clinical Coordinating Center ( UG3/UH3 Exploratory/Developmental Phased Award Cooperative Agreement ( Clinical Trial Not Allowed)).. This Notice of Intent to Publish (NOITP) is being provided to allow potential eligible applicants sufficient time to develop competitive and responsive milestone-driven scientific projects and thus prepare the applicant for the timely submission of an application.. The intended FOA will utilize the UG3/UH3 Exploratory/Developmental Phased Award Cooperative Agreement (Clinical Trial Not Allowed) activity code to issue a single three-year milestone-driven UG3 award, followed by an up to 4 year award if NHLBI-approved milestones are successfully met, for a total of up to seven year support for this new initiative. A companion award for a Biospecimen and Data Resource Center is anticipated to be made in parallel to the Clinical Coordinating Center to provide data management, laboratory support and expertise for the new initiative. (see NOT-HL-19-727). A key characteristic of the Clinical Coordinating Center application will be completion of core milestones. A core milestone is defined as a scheduled event in the project timeline that signifies the completion of a major project stage or activity. Milestones must be performance-based to achieve completion of the Intergenerational Severe Hemophilia A Precision Medicine Resource on time and on budget. Milestones must be established for both the first three years (the UG3 phase) and subsequent (up to) four years (the UH3 phase) of the program. Satisfactory completion of the milestones for the first three years will be assessed administratively by NHLBI to determine eligibility to continue the award. Due to the collaborative and parallel nature of these FOAs, NHLBI will enter into negotiation with the Clinical Coordinating Center to achieve early phase-out of the award if Clinical Coordinating Center and/ or Biospecimen and Data Resource Center progress is deemed inadequate upon NHLBI administrative review.. Through this NOFO, the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) is announcing the availability of $1,000,000 for the research project titled ‚ÄúClosing the Homeownership Gap and Preserving Homeownership During Economic Decline.‚Äů HUD may fund more than one award from the funds available under this NOFO. The objective of the NOFO is to fund rigorous evaluations of (a) the factors that contribute to the gaps in homeownership rates among different demographic groups, and the effect of public policies and other initiatives (including private or philanthropic efforts) on addressing these gaps, and (b) how homeownership can be preserved during economic decline including the effects of related public policies and other initiatives (including private or philanthropic efforts on achieving preservation goals). Proposals may address either or both these topics. The research funded under this NOFO will advance scientific knowledge and produce policy-relevant evidence on homeownership gaps and may inform the development of future approaches to help communities of color and other underserved communities achieve more equitable homeownership rates.¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬†BackgroundHomeownership is often viewed as the entry to the American dream and the gateway to intergenerational wealth. However, this pathway is often less achievable for underserved groups who post a lower homeownership rate than non-underserved families (Ray, et al. 2021). These homeownership gaps have contributed to lower median family wealth for disadvantaged groups.¬†Because wealth (as measured by the total amount of assets a person owns minus debts) is a critical predictor of education, health, employment, and other quality of life metrics, a strategy to address the homeownership gap can have positive effects beyond just housing itself.This NOFO is focused on providing greater analysis and research on critical aspects of the homeownership gap, including residential patterns of undeserved groups/communities and the causes of ethnic/racial/gender/age/other disparities and obstacles to homeownership among these groups. The neighborhoods where homebuyers purchase their homes contribute to their home‚Äôs worth and its chance of appreciation over time, which has important implications for the long-term financial returns associated with homeownership. Despite some progress in achieving integration, weaknesses in fair housing enforcement have undermined the ability of the Fair Housing Act to dismantle segregation and combat discrimination. The forms of discrimination that were common in the past such as segregation by design or edict, including redlining, have shifted over time, and housing discrimination‚Äîalong with persisting residential segregation‚Äîcontinue to hamper¬†disadvantaged homebuyers‚Äô ability to build equity. Home mortgage borrowers in underserved groups and communities remain concentrated in residentially segregated areas where homes have failed to appreciate at the same pace as those in neighborhoods where non-disadvantaged borrowers predominantly buy their homes.A common measure of the extent to which disadvantaged residents are segregated from other groups in cities is the index of dissimilarity. The dissimilarity index represents the percentage of one of the two groups included in the analysis that would have to move in order to achieve more equitable distribution within smaller geographic units that match the composition of the entire city. Minority residents are extremely segregated from the rest of the population in many major cities, e.g., Detroit, Baltimore, Cleveland, and Atlanta. In Atlanta, the city with the highest levels of segregation, almost 70% of minority residents would have to move to new Census tracts to produce a uniform geographic distribution.Racial economic inequality in the United States is primarily the result of unequal investments among communities. Estimates showing the percentage of unbanked or underbanked populations in the U.S. for different racial and ethnic groups often highlight inequalities in the financial health of their neighborhoods (FDIC, 2021). The percentage of blacks (46%) who are unbanked or underbanked alone is over three times the percentage of whites (14%) who experience the same struggle. Thirty-two percent of Hispanics are also either un- or under- banked.This overview provides a general overall look at the role of segregation, discrimination, and racism in the housing market, as well as the consequences for educational attainment and wealth accumulation for persons of color and others in underserved communities, and points to the need for further research and assessment of potential policy responses.¬†Research Objectives and PrioritiesThe objective of this NOFO is to fund research projects that can assess the extent of the homeownership gaps between minorities and majority homeowners; to evaluate the barriers to homeownership facing minorities; and to assess the threats that economic decline pose for homeownership preservation, including public and private responses to these threats. Research could include renters seeking or considering homeownership, new homebuyers, or existing homeowners. Barriers can include mortgage lending discrimination by lenders, disparate outcomes from lending to different applicant demographic groups as well as credit history and collateral requirements that can disadvantage nonwhite applicants. Furthermore, many minority renters could be homeowners¬†if they were not facing financial and discriminatory barriers to acquiring a home.¬†Closing the homeownership gaps requires identifying the factors that prevent¬†renters of color and others in underserved groups from becoming homeowners.The study may be longitudinal or a cross-sectional at borrower level. It could also focus on specific areas or cities where the problem is especially acute or localities that have taken steps toward ameliorating the homeownership gap. Evaluating the effect of various policies and programs, local or national, public or private in addressing the issue is an important topic for this NOFO.The emphasis would be on a quantitative study, but a qualitative approach could be a useful supplement. Data could be loan- or home-level as well as locality-level. Multiple sources of data could be employed.¬†Additional Research ConsiderationsHUD intends to fund proposals that use rigorous methods to measure the extent, causes, and impact of homeownership gaps and explore the effect of economic decline on homeownership preservation. The proposal should discuss how the applicants plan to control other factors that affect homeownership rates, such as federal and local regulations, access to financing and policies, and familiarity of customers with mortgage shopping and other aspects of home acquisition. The proposal may need to identify a plan to control applicant bias (self-selection), regional housing costs, and household demographics.¬†Proposals can be limited to a set of jurisdictions, but the applicant must demonstrate that the proposed jurisdictions are sufficient for a robust analysis, with sufficient data points to allow for robust statistical power, and for the establishment of a counterfactual. The study should describe the method and design specification for estimating the relevant counterfactual outcomes. Applicants are expected to demonstrate that they have or will likely have access to homeownership rates data and other relevant data points included in the study. Applicants should discuss their experience using the proposed data and matching it to other data sources. Applicants should discuss any additional data sources that will be included in the study and the feasibility of obtaining the data. Applicants shall identify major methodological issues and data limitations and ways the study will address them.HUD will not prescribe specific information collection approaches, protocols, or instruments. Any information collection efforts conducted by a grantee to address the NOFO objectives will not be subject to the Paperwork Reduction Act.Eligible ActivitiesEligible activities include all research and project management activities that contribute to meeting the NOFO objectives and research needs at a high-quality level, and specifically to complete the funded research. Eligible activities include, but are not necessarily limited to the following:Defining the research steps from the articulation of research questions (including literature review) through the development of research design, data collection and analysis plans, to the analysis of data, and finally including the writing of publication-quality research reports and formal presentations and briefings on findings.Regular communication with HUD staff on all project deliverables, as required by HUD‚Äôs substantial involvement under the cooperative agreement.Consulting with experts on any aspect of the research as needed to bring expertise to enhance the research team‚Äôs knowledge in critical areas.Project management activities, including required project management tools (Opening Meeting, Management and Work Plan and Budget, Quality Control Plan, and Quarterly Progress Reports) and regular communication with HUD staff for monitoring purposes.Data acquisition costs.Dissemination of research findings through seminars, presentations, worships, etc.Project DeliverablesHUD‚Äôs Cooperative Agreements require certain deliverables as part of the project management system, including the following: (1) an Opening meeting with HUD; (2) a Management and Work Plan providing a detailed outline of specific tasks, a project timeline, staffing and management responsibilities, and the allocation of resources; (3) a Quality Control Plan that documents all necessary measures taken by the Awardee to assure that the quality of end products of service shall meet the requirements outlined in the Cooperative Agreement; and (4) Quarterly Progress Reports. Please note that the Management and Work Plan is the document that will govern HUD‚Äôs monitoring of project activities.Project deliverables shall also include the following documents, each of which shall be approved by the Government Technical Representative assigned to the project:Research Design, Data Collection and Analysis Plan (RD/DCAP): The Research Design will serve as a technical blueprint for all research activities undertaken to address research objectives. The Data Collection and Analysis Plan will provide details on the data sources, the types of analytic methods that will be used, and the schedule for accomplishing these tasks. The RD/DCAP must demonstrate how the analysis plan will address the research questions and hypotheses proposed.Interim Report: The Interim Report will be released near the midpoint of the project and provide a summary of the project up to that point. The Interim Report should be considered an opportunity to evaluate the state of the project.Draft and Final Report: The Final Report must summarize the work conducted over the course of the project, and present the study objectives, data sources, analysis methods, and results. The Final Report is the key deliverable of the study and must serve as a stand-alone document that meets the overall objective of this project. The Final Report should be edited and prepared for publication in accordance with¬†HUD‚Äôs Guidelines for Preparing a Report for Publication.Briefings to HUD: Awardees will be asked to provide briefings to HUD near the midpoint of their project and after the Final Report is submitted.Data Files. The goal of the training grant program is to enhance the quality and availability of safety training for United States commercial fishermen. Evaluating Neurocognitive Complications of Pediatric Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) and Potential Risk and Protective Factors Biostatistics Research Center (U01 Clinical Trial Not Allowed)
This Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) invites applications for a Biostatistics Research Center (BRC) to participate in a clinical consortium to better understand the neurocognitive impact of new onset type 1 diabetes (T1D) in pre-pubertal children. A separate RFA (RFA-DK-23-010 ) invites Clinical Centers (CCs) to establish a diverse cohort of pre-pubertal children newly diagnosed with T1D and will longitudinally evaluate disease-related perturbations in neurocognitive function, as well as identify potential clinical, developmental, and/or environmental factors associated with neurocognitive function in T1D.. The PI(s) of the BRC and the PIs from each of the CCs selected via RFA-DK-23-010 will form a cooperative research consortium in conjunction with NIDDK to design and implement a uniform protocol across approximately 10 CCs and the BRC. Findings from this observational study are expected to advance our understanding of the impact of T1D on the developing brain and identify risk and protective factors associated with neurocognitive functioning to ultimately inform on effective strategies to decrease adverse neurodevelopmental outcomes and long-term neurocognitive sequelae of T1D.

Understanding the Experience and Outcomes of Students with Disabilities who have 504 Plans
The purpose of the DRRPs is to achieve the goals of, and improve the effectiveness of, services authorized under the Rehabilitation Act, by generating new knowledge, or developing methods, procedures, and rehabilitation technologies that advance a wide range of health and function, community living, and employment outcomes among people with disabilities, especially people with disabilities who have the greatest support needs. Under this particular DRRP priority, the grantee must conduct research toward new knowledge of the school experiences and outcomes among elementary or secondary students who have 504 plans. These formal plans protect the rights of children with disabilities under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, by giving them the accommodations, supports, or services they need in school. NIDILRR plans to make one grant under this opportunity in FY 2023. This grant will have a 60-month project period, with five 12-month budget periods.

The Fishing Safety Research Grant Program established by The Coast Guard Authorization Act of 2010 (P.L. 111-281), as amended by the Howard Coble Coast Guard and Maritime Transportation Act of 2014 (P.L. 113-281), is intended to provide funding to individuals in academia, members of non-profit organizations and businesses involved in fishing and maritime matters, and other persons with expertise in commercial fishing safety. The funding will be used to support research on improving the occupational safety of workers in the commercial fishing industry. This includes:. . . improving vessel design;. developing and improving emergency and survival equipment;. enhancing vessel monitoring systems;. improving communication devices, de-icing technology, and severe weather detection.. . . In order to support and administer the grant program, the Coast Guard and NIOSH signed a Memorandum of Understanding on May 17, 2018. While the Coast Guard, along with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), provides regulatory oversight for safety and health matters within the commercial fishing industry, NIOSH is an agency operating under the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) with the mission of generating new knowledge in occupational safety and health and transferring that knowledge into practice to prevent worker injury, illness and death. NIOSH conducts and funds scientific research, develops methods to prevent occupational hazards, develops guidance and authoritative recommendations, translates scientific knowledge into products and services, disseminates information, identifies factors underlying work-related disease and injury and responds to requests for workplace health hazard evaluations.. . NCCIH Natural Product Early Phase Clinical Trial Award (R33 Clinical Trial Required)
This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) encourages applications for investigator-initiated, early phase, clinical trials of natural products (i.e., botanicals, dietary supplements, and probiotics), which have a strong scientific premise to justify further clinical testing. Under this FOA, trials must be designed so that results, whether positive or negative, will provide information of high scientific utility and will support decisions about further development or testing of the natural product. This FOA will provide up to 3 years support for studies to replicate the impact of the natural product on the biological signature(s) when used by humans and assess whether there is an association between the degree of the impact on the biological signature and functional or clinical outcomes in a patient population. Applications are encouraged to design studies to determine how to optimize the impact of the natural product on the biological signature by optimizing the delivery of the natural product by examining different doses or formulations. In addition, applications can be designed to combine the natural product with another treatment approach that is known to impact the same biological signature; or study the impact of the natural product in a target population that is more responsive. Clinical trials submitted under this FOA are expected to be hypothesis based, milestone-driven, and directly related to the research priorities and mission of NCCIH. This R33 funding mechanism is intended to accelerate the translation of emerging basic science findings about natural products into early stage clinical testing to determine whether continued clinical research is warranted. This FOA will not support efficacy or effectiveness trials, nor will it support trials to test natural products for the treatment or prevention of cancer.
