This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) provides support to eligible, domestic institutions to develop and implement Postbaccalaureate Research Education Programs in Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolic Diseases (DDEMD). These post-baccalaureate research programs will incorporate extensive research experiences and well-designed courses for skills development to prepare recent college graduates from diverse backgrounds to transition into and complete rigorous, research-focused biomedical doctoral degree programs (e.g., Ph.D. or M.D./Ph.D.). The long-term goal of post-baccalaureate participants admitted to the program should be pursuing a career focused on DDEMD-related research. Eligible applicants for the R25 must be research-intensive doctoral degree-granting institutions with a research base in DDEMD science of at least $3 million in direct costs of peer-reviewed research projects, and research opportunities for students admitted to the program must be in DDEMD science.

Development and Validation of Models for Alzheimers Disease-Related Dementias (ADRD) (R61/R33 - Clinical Trial Not Allowed)
"This FOA would support development and validation of clinically relevant models of AD/ADRD including post-TBI dementias. Models could include small animals, larger animals, ex vivo models, human iPSCs, or other in vitro models. Validation includes internal, face, construct, and predictive (to the extent possible) validation. Such validations could include looking at underlying mechanism/pathways, functional imaging, behavior, and other cognitive readouts. Independent replication is also encouraged. . These models can be developed/validated with the goal of supporting therapy development or better understanding of human disease mechanisms and mechanisms that uncover predisposition to developing neurodegenerative dementias. Either way, it is essential that models reflect the human condition as much as possible. Novel models of complex pathology or comorbid conditions are encouraged. Such models could include multiple manipulations (genetics, environment, lifestyle, age, etc.) to better reflect the complex interaction of risk factors in patients. New models need to be innovative and address a gap in the currently available models."

NCCIH Natural Product Early Phase Clinical Trial Phased Innovation Award (R61/R33 Clinical Trial Required)
This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) encourages applications for investigator-initiated, early phase, clinical trials of natural products (i.e., botanicals, dietary supplements, and probiotics), which have a strong scientific premise to justify further clinical testing. Under this FOA, trials must be designed so that results, whether positive or negative, will provide information of high scientific utility and will support decisions about further development or testing of the natural product. This FOA will provide up to two years (R61 phase) of support for milestone-driven testing of bioavailability, pharmacokinetics, and assessment of the natural products effect (i.e., measure of mechanism of action) when used by humans on a biological signature(s). If milestones in the R61 phase are achieved, up to 3 years of additional support (R33 phase) may be awarded to replicate the impact of the natural product on the biological signature(s) when used by humans and assess whether there is an association between the degree of the impact on the biological signature and functional or clinical outcomes in a patient population. Applications can design R33 studies to determine how to optimize the impact of the natural product on the biological signature by (1) optimizing the delivery of the natural product by dose or formulation; (2) combining the natural product with another treatment approach that is known to impact the same biological signature; or (3) studying the impact of the natural product in a target population that is more responsive. Clinical trials submitted under this FOA are expected to be hypothesis based, milestone-driven, and directly related to the research priorities and mission of NCCIH. This R61/R33 funding mechanism is intended to accelerate the translation of emerging basic science findings about natural products into early-stage clinical testing to determine whether continued clinical research is warranted. CCRP Initiative: Countermeasures Against Chemical Threats (CounterACT) Therapeutics Discovery and Early-Stage Development (UG3/UH3 Clinical Trial Not Allowed)
This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) solicits applications for the early-stage development of therapeutics to mitigate the adverse health effects resulting from toxic chemical exposure. Chemical threats are toxic compounds that could be used in a terrorist attack or accidentally released from industrial production, storage or shipping. They include specific chemical warfare agents, toxic industrial chemicals, pesticides, and pharmaceutical-based agents. The overall scope of this solicitation includes validation of therapeutic targets and preclinical characterization of lead compounds. The UG3 phase of this FOA supports target validation and characterization of initial lead compound(s); UH3 phase activities include candidate optimization and in vivo demonstration of activity and efficacy in relevant post-exposure models. Ending the HIV Epidemic: Resource Center to Engage Justice-Involved Populations (U24 Clinical Trial Optional)
The goal of this initiative is to develop a patient-focused research resource center to support the work of the HIV/Justice Regional Research Hubs described in RFA-DA-24-105. The project will create a Patient Engagement Resource Center (PERC) that will partner with patients and others having lived experience with HIV, SUD, and the criminal legal system to form a research advisory/consultation model that can support the Regional Research Hub projects. In addition, the awardee will conduct original research to identify key access and utilization barriers to HIV/SUD services for individuals with criminal-legal involvement; and pilot test potential solutions. The overarching goal is to embrace user-centered design principles to inform both research and practice, in order to better engage populations involved in the criminal legal system in HIV and SUD prevention and treatment.

The purpose of this FOA is to invite applications for Chemical Analysis Sites to serve as part of the Molecular Transducers of Physical Activity Consortium (MoTrPAC; http://commonfund.nih.gov/MolecularTransducers). F23AS00037 Research and Development of Biotechnological Tools for White-nose Syndrome
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Service) is making funding available in 2022 and 2023 for research and development of enduring solutions to manage white-nose syndrome (WNS) in bats. The Service provides financial and technical assistance to nongovernmental, university, and private researchers, as well as state and local governments, Native American tribes, and federal agencies, for the management of WNS and conservation of bats. Projects supported under this funding opportunity will investigate, develop, evaluate, and implement innovative biotechnologies to eliminate the threat of WNS to bats in North America. . . Since 2007, white-nose syndrome has caused the deaths of millions of bats in North America. The disease is caused by an invasive fungus, Pseudogymnoascus destructans (Pd), in the Phylum Ascomycota, that grows best in cold, damp, dark environments like those preferred by hibernating bats. Twelve species of bats in temperate North America are known to be susceptible to infections by Pd, but the severity of WNS varies considerably among them.  Several species suffer high rates of mortality from WNS while others suffer only minor infections. An additional six North American bat species are known to have been exposed to Pd but have not been shown to suffer infection. In Europe and Asia, where Pd likely originated, multiple bat species are known to be susceptible to WNS, but with only minor infections and no evidence of mass mortality from the disease. As of August 2022, WNS is confirmed or suspected in bats in 39 states and eight Canadian provinces, and evidence of the causative fungus, Pd, has been detected in at least four additional states without signs of the disease. Growth in our scientific understanding of WNS, Pd, and susceptible bats has been rapid since the disease was first identified in 2007. Evidence from multiple lines of investigation, along with recent advances in biotechnology, have laid the groundwork for developing biotechnological tools that may put an end to the threat this invasive species poses to bats in North America.. . Funding through the Research and Development of Biotechnological Tools for WNS grant opportunity will advance projects that leverage knowledge about WNS, fungal pathogens, invasive species, wildlife diseases and other relevant topics to produce enduring solutions to WNS in North America. We seek management solutions that are pathogen-specific, effective, scalable, and safe for native biota and environments. For this opportunity, we consider biotechnological tools to be those that involve the modification of an organism or genome for the purposes of acting on the function of an organism (in this case, Pd). Projects submitted to this opportunity should clearly achieve progress toward an implementable management tool. NCCIH Multi-Site Feasibility Clinical Trials of Mind and Body Interventions (R01 Clinical Trial Required)
This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) invites applications for investigator-initiated clinical trials of complementary and integrative health approaches with physical and/or psychological therapeutic inputs (often called mind and body interventions) in NCCIH-designated areas of high research priority. Applications submitted under this FOA are expected to propose a multi-site clinical trial to assess whether the intervention can be delivered with fidelity across sites; demonstrate feasibility of recruitment, accrual, and randomization of participants across sites; demonstrate participant adherence to the intervention, as well as retention of participants throughout the study across sites; and/or demonstrate feasibility of data collection across sites in preparation for a future multi-site trial. The need for multi-site feasibility trials are expected to be justified by sufficient preliminary data from previous single site feasibility or acceptability trial(s)or the published literature. This FOA will not support randomized clinical trials to determine efficacy or effectiveness. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), National Center for Injury Prevention and Control (NCIPC) is soliciting research proposals to expand the evidence base for policy approaches for the primary prevention of multiple forms of violence experienced by children, youth, and adults. Policies that promote the social and economic well-being of populations and address community characteristics associated with violence have the potential to not only reduce rates of multiple forms of violence, including the four forms that are the focus of this announcement: child abuse and neglect, youth violence/community violence, intimate partner violence (including teen dating violence), and sexual violence, but also impact health equity. To advance CDC’s commitment to achieving health equity, the intent is to support applications that investigate policies that address social and structural conditions to reduce the disproportionate burden of violence experienced by some groups and communities. In the last decades the understanding of the molecular mechanisms responsible for cancer development and progression has significantly improved. In particular, a lot of progress has been made regarding the genetics of cancer that has led to the discovery and implementation into the clinic of numerous treatments as well as many biomarkers to improve screening, diagnosis and prognosis of cancers, leading to an increase in survival and improvement in the quality of life of cancer patients.. . Despite these significant advancements, there is still much to be learned about cancers research. More recently, epigenetics, the study of changes in gene expression without alterations in the DNA sequence, has emerged as an important area of investigation. The epigenetic research, driven by technological progress like high-throughput sequencing technology, has been developing rapidly. The improvement of knowledge of the chromatin structure and its accessibility along with the mechanisms of histone modifications has revealed the important role of epigenetic modifications in the gene expression. During development, the establishment of the epigenetic program is particularly important and its stability essential for the maintenance of the functions of each cell type. Alterations in epigenetic modifications are associated with several pathologies and have been particularly highlighted in cancers. It is commonly accepted now that cancers are as much epigenetic diseases as genetic ones. It remains to be understood to what extent these epigenetic alterations influence the development of a cancer and what their importance in tumour growth is.. . Epigenetic changes can be observed between healthy and cancerous cells. Large-scale cancer epi/genome sequencing efforts have currently revealed a very large number of epigenetic marks and genetic alterations in cancer cells and tissues. They may have clinical utility as potential tumour biomarkers to help identify specific cells and target the cell of origin of a given tumour or classify tumour type. Epigenetics thus represents an important tool for the improvement of early detection and the prediction of the disease. Epigenetics and epigenomics therefore have significant potential for clinical application as they can help clinicians diagnose certain types of tumours and could help determine the efficacy of treatments.. . The treatment targeting epigenetics is becoming an attractive and promising strategy for anticancer therapy. Indeed, unlike genetic alterations, which are irreversible, epigenetic modifications are reversible. This field of research thus offers great opportunity for new therapeutic approaches and has paved the way for the development of new therapeutic compounds, so-called epidrugs. Some new drugs directed at epigenetic modulators have already been developed and are available. However, apart from a few cases, the clinical applications of epidrugs, alone or in combination with radiotherapy, chemotherapy or immunotherapy, are still far from common practice, particularly for solid tumours. It is therefore necessary to translate the fundamental knowledge of this emerging field into concrete clinical applications.. . Considering this background, the TRANSCAN-3 partners have agreed to focus their third Joint Transnational Call for proposals (JTC 2023) on: "Translational research on cancer epigenetics". TRANSCAN-3 aims at promoting highly innovative and ambitious collaborative projects in translational cancer research at European and international level, and considers that, based on the previous grounds, it is timely and relevant to focus its funding on this topic.
