Pancreatic Cancer Detection Consortium: Research Units (U01 Clinical Trial Optional)

The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to solicit applications for the Research Units (RUs), one of the two scientific components of the Pancreatic Cancer Detection Consortium (PCDC), to conduct research on early detection of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) and characterization of its precursor lesions to identify those patients who are at high risk of progression to cancer. The PCDC will continue to address one of the four research priorities identified in the National Cancer Institute's 2014 Scientific Framework for Pancreatic Ductal Adenocarcinoma. The PCDC will support research for the development and testing of new molecular and imaging biomarkers for detecting PDAC early and for identifying those patients at high risk of PDAC (because of genetic factors or presence of precursor lesions) who could be candidates for early intervention. The PCDC-RUs will consist of multi-disciplinary teams and will undertake studies to: identify and test biomarkers measurable in bodily fluids for early detection of PDAC and/or its precursor lesions; determine which pancreatic cysts are likely to progress to cancer; develop molecular- and/or imaging-based approaches for screening populations at high risk of PDAC; use machine learning and computational approaches towards biomarker discovery and/or validation; and conduct biomarker validation studies. The PCDC-RUs will also collect longitudinal biospecimens for building a biorepository. Each PCDC-RU is expected to participate in collaborative activities with other PCDC-RUs and share ideas, biospecimens and data within the Consortium. The other scientific component of the PCDC will be the Management and Data Coordination Unit (MDCU). Recipients will support healthy behaviors, facilitate community-clinical linkages to build support for interventions to prevent and reduce STD disparities, enhance and sustain partnerships, support communication strategies that promote STD program successes and leverage additional resources for STD, HIV, viral hepatitis control and prevention, and evaluate the efficacy of this intervention approach. The new FOA provides support in five focus areas:  (1) implementation of community engagement methods (e.g. community-based participatory research) to achieve health equity; (2) identification and implementation of systems and environmental change strategies that (a) promote sexual health and support healthy behaviors and (b) facilitate community-clinical linkages to build support for interventions to prevent and reduce STI disparities; (3) enhancement and sustainability of partnerships; (4) support for communication strategies to promote STD program successes and leverage additional resources for STI control and prevention; and (5) evaluation of the efficacy of this approach and intervention implementation.

Operating Grant: Bringing Rare Disease Gene Therapies to Clinical Trial Readiness

Rare diseases (RDs) constitute an under-recognized global health priority. In fact, notwithstanding their name, rare diseases are far from rare. The population prevalence of rare diseases is reported at 3.5-6.0% and they affect as many as 446 million people globally1.. . Of the 7,000 known rare diseases, only 5% have a treatment, with far fewer having a cure, and >80% are single gene disorders, many of which are likely amenable to gene therapy approaches. The last five years in the gene therapy field have witnessed the approval of several gene therapies for inherited diseases in Europe, the United States, and Canada. Many gene therapies for rare diseases have the potential to constitute one-time treatments with lifelong curative potential. However, a gap remains in Canada between translating therapies from efficacy demonstration in disease models to human clinical trial readiness.

Technical Assistance & Training Grant. .  . . Qualified private, nonprofit and public (including tribal) intermediary organizations proposing to carry out financial and technical assistance programs will be eligible to receive the funding. The RCDI structure requires the intermediary (grantee) to provide a program of financial and technical assistance to recipients to develop their capacity and ability to undertake projects related to housing, community facilities, or community and economic development. The recipients will, in turn, provide programs that will support their communities (beneficiaries). The Intermediary will be required to provide matching funds in an amount at least equal to the RCDI grant. The respective minimum and maximum grant amount per Intermediary are $50,000 and $500,000.

Section 2(a)(5) of the ESA authorizes the use of Federal financial assistance to encourage the states and other interested parties to develop and maintain conservation programs to safeguard the Nation‚Äôs heritage in fish, wildlife and plants for the benefit of all citizens.. .
