Limited Competition: Cooperative Human Tissue Network (CHTN; UM1 Clinical Trial Not Allowed)
The purpose of this Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO), issued by the National Cancer Institute (NCI), is to invite competing continuation applications for cooperative agreement awards from current recipients of the NCI-supported Cooperative Human Tissue Network (CHTN).. CHTN with all individual CHTN recipients (referred to as CHTN Divisions) collectively form the CHTN national resource. Presently, the organizational structure of the Network comprises six Divisions.. The goal of the CHTN is to collect and distribute to investigators high-quality human tissue specimens to facilitate basic and translational cancer research. Such specimens may be needed for scientific discovery and the development of various molecular diagnostic tests, and prognostic or predictive assays. The CHTN is designed as a unique biospecimen resource in that it is based on the prospective collection and distribution of samples upon specific investigators requests. Samples to be collected from patients include pre-cancerous, malignant, and benign neoplastic tissues, as well as tissues with non-neoplastic diseases and normal tissues. Since its establishment by the NCI in 1987, the CHTN has provided more than 1,350,000 malignant, benign, diseased, and uninvolved (normal adjacent) high-quality human tissue specimens from a wide variety of organ sites to over four thousand investigators.

Team Grant: Improving Health and Administrative Data and Monitoring for Rare Diseases
75% funding for health research, knowledge translation, and commercialization projects.
The current administrative coding system used in Canada, the International Classification of Diseases (ICD)-10-CA, only includes coding for a small fraction of the over 7000 known rare diseases. This prevents determination of the actual cost of diagnosis, care, and research of rare inherited diseases in Canada and impedes accurate estimation of the level of required investment. Retrospective studies from other countries suggest that rare/inherited diseases as a disease class currently account for the highest proportion of pediatric mortality and hospital bed occupancy, as well as the highest direct cost to the pediatric health care system.. . To address this issue, the Orphanet Initiative developed the ORPHAcodes, a coding system that provides a unique identifier to each rare disease. In collaboration with Orphanet, the World Health Organization integrated the ORPHAcodes in the revision of ICD-10, resulting in the ICD-11 classification, which now allows tracking of rare diseases in administrative databases. However, this new system is not yet implemented in Canada.

All Canadians, across the lifecycle, are affected by the quality of the air we breathe, both indoors and outdoors. Inhalation of gases and toxins resulting from, but not limited to, smoking, vaping, radon and air pollution can significantly impact the health of the lungs and other organ systems, such as the heart and brain. Resultant absorption of particulate matter and aerosol pollutants can damage lung tissue directly and cause local and systemic inflammation throughout the body. Considering the ongoing, new and emerging threats to lung health, such as lung cancers among people who have never smoked, the effects of vaping on health, viral infections (e.g., SARS-CoV-2), and the impacts of climate change, there is an urgent need for strategic investment in lung health.. . Across the lifecycle, particularly at the extremes of age (the very young and very old), individuals are vulnerable to the impact of poor air quality. Poor air quality (through air pollution, climate emergencies, and atmospheric inversions) has been linked to preventable emergency department (ED) visits, hospitalizations and even deaths. A diverse range of serious cardiovascular and respiratory conditions have been shown to increase within three days of increases in ozone, sulfur dioxide, nitrous oxide and carbon monoxide as measured through the Air Quality Health Index (AQHI). The pathophysiology of these resultant conditions is thought to be related to systemic inflammation, so it is perhaps not surprising that other inflammatory conditions such as stroke, heart attacks, infections, and headache can increase with poor air quality measures.. . Moreover, cigarette smoking and vaping are estimated to contribute significantly to preventable deaths, hospitalizations and ED visits. The recent dramatic rise in vaping among youth who have never smoked, along with the E-cigarette and Vaping Products Acute Lung Injury (EVALI) crisis in the US and Canada prior to the pandemic, reflect the need to continue examining the health effects of vaping. While cigarette smoking has been linked to lung and multiple other cancers, lung cancers in people who haven't smoked are increasing, and the role of lung toxins in the etiology of these cancers requires additional investigation. Over time, the accumulated toxic load on the lung from ongoing exposure to environmental pollutants, such as smoking, vaping and poor air quality, becomes unsustainable and result in detrimental health effects on the lung. For individuals with underlying and/or active lung disease, these exposures result in increased symptom burden and morbidity.. . Finally, there are inequitable impacts on lung health connected from geographical location, social status, ancestral heritage, sex, gender, sexual orientation and age. For example, it is becoming more common for people residing in remote, rural and northern communities to be adversely affected by poor air quality caused by wildfires. Women generally are both under-represented in research and mis-diagnosed for cardio-respiratory conditions, suggesting that sex and gender considerations are in urgent need of attention. Moreover, Indigenous Peoples (First Nations, Inuit and Métis) in Canada are at risk of greater exposure to toxins in their lungs due to higher smoking rates, crowded/poor housing and environmental factors that affect air and water quality. Interestingly, current evidence suggests there are wide differences between First Nations, Inuit and Métis populations related to rates of detection for various lung health conditions.. . The goal of this funding opportunity is to unite interdisciplinary Research Teams to collectively address threats to lung health in a manner that leverages past investments, existing capacity, available infrastructure and research expertise.

The Partners for Fish and Wildlife (PFW) Program is a voluntary, incentive-based program that provides direct technical assistance and financial assistance in the form of cooperative and grant agreements to private landowners to restore and conserve fish and wildlife habitat for the benefit of federal trust resources. The PFW Program is delivered through more than 250 full-time staff, active in all 50 States and territories. Partners for Fish and Wildlife Program staff coordinate with project partners, stakeholders and other Service programs to identify geographic focus areas and develop habitat conservation priorities within these focus areas. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) National Center for Injury Prevention and Control (NCIPC, Injury Center) is soliciting investigator-initiated research to partner with communities to develop and rigorously evaluate the effectiveness of new, innovative, under-developed, or untested community-based strategies/interventions/programs/practices to reduce overdose. Strategies/interventions/programs/practices may include, but are not limited to, those that focus on preventing drug use initiation and drug use, reducing non-infectious harms related to drug use, reducing stigma or other barriers to harm reduction or substance use disorder treatment, and increasing linkage to and retention in care. Research should focus on groups experiencing disproportionate burden of overdose and/or groups that are at greater risk of experiencing adverse outcomes related to substance use.  Research should also involve engaging individuals in the focus population (e.g., people with lived experience with substance use).

Ending the HIV Epidemic: Focus on Justice Populations with SUD (R61/R33 Clinical Trial Required)
Under the Ending the HIV Epidemic (EHE) initiative, the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) is releasing a set of interrelated RFAs to create the HIV/Justice Research Network, a coordinated effort to study innovative strategies to promote improvements in HIV prevention and treatment services for individuals involved in the criminal legal system with substance use disorder (SUD). Separate FOAs are being issued to support three components: multiple Regional Research Hubs (RRH; RFA-DA-24-015); one Data Coordination and Dissemination Center (RFA-DA-24-023); and one Patient Engagement Resource Center (PERC; RFA-DA-24-022). It is imperative that prospective applicants read all of these related FOAs to better understand the intended purpose and structure of the HIV/Justice Research Network.. This FOA seeks applications for multiple Regional Research Hubs. The Administration for Children and Families, Administration on Children, Youth and Families, Family and Youth Services Bureau announces the availability of funds under the Sexual Risk Avoidance Education (SRAE) Program.  The purpose of the SRAE Program is to fund projects to implement sexual risk avoidance education that teach participants how to voluntarily refrain from non-marital sexual activity.  The services are targeted to participants that reside in areas with high rates of teen births and/or are at greatest risk of contracting sexually transmitted infections (STIs). The goals of SRAE are to empower participants to make healthy decisions, and provide tools and resources to prevent pregnancy, STIs, and youth engagement in other risky behaviors.  Successful applicants are expected to submit program plans that agree to 1) use medically accurate information referenced to peer-reviewed publications by education, scientific, governmental or health organizations; 2) implement sexual risk avoidance curricula and/or strategies with an evidence-based approach to integrate research findings with practical implementation that aligns with the needs and desired outcomes for the intended audience; and 3) teach the benefits associated with self-regulation, success sequencing for poverty prevention, healthy relationships, goal setting, resisting sexual coercion, dating violence, and other youth risk behaviors such as underage drinking or illicit drug use without normalizing teen sexual activity.

The purpose of this notice of funding opportunity (NOFO) is to investigate the feasibility, effectiveness, and cost-effectiveness of high-quality and innovative public health interventions to improve glaucoma detection and management among high-risk populations within community-based health care delivery settings. This NOFO has two components:Component A: Comparative effectiveness trials of community-based interventions in high-risk populations in diverse locations. Communities include populations living with undiagnosed eye diseases due to lack of access, resources, vision specialists, etc. Award recipients are expected to collaborate to establish a standard investigative protocol.Component B:  A coordinating center to provide data storage (if needed), harmonize data collection and data analysis, logistic and communication support to enhance the efficiency, productivity for component A.Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of irreversible blindness in the United States, and the leading cause of blindness among African Americans. Of an estimated 2.7 million people with glaucoma, 50% of them are unaware of their condition. Given the low prevalence in the general population, this NOFO focuses on people at high-risk for glaucoma and does not include broad general screening programs.In the past decade, large-scale glaucoma studies funded by CDC among high-risk groups have demonstrated success in screening and follow-up care to slow disease progression through innovative delivery programs. CDC intends to further this research by funding projects with strategies that are cost-effective, comprehensive, and include allied health care professionals (e.g. community healthcare workers, ophthalmic technicians, navigators); mobilize community partners and resources; use advanced technological approaches; demonstrate potential for adoption into real-world clinical practice; and have the greatest potential to affect population health, public policy, and implementation.

NIOSH supports exploratory and developmental research projects (R21) that address issues related to diagnostic or treatment uncertainty with respect to individuals receiving monitoring and/or treatment under subtitle B, of the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act of 2010 (Public Law 111‚Äě347, as amended by Public Laws¬†114‚Äě113¬†and¬†116‚Äě59).To help address the Zadroga Act research mandate, as supported by the World Trade Center (WTC) Health Program in consultation with the¬†WTC Health Program Scientific/Technical Advisory Committee, NIOSH is soliciting applications for scientifically rigorous research (42 U.S.C. ¬ß300mm‚Äě51) among enrolled certified-eligible WTC survivors and similarly exposed populations in New York City in Manhattan between Houston Street and 14th Street and in Brooklyn to help answer critical questions about:Physical and mental health conditions that may be related to the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks;Diagnosing WTC-related health conditions for which there has been diagnostic uncertainty; andTreating WTC-related health conditions for which there has been treatment uncertainty.A major area of research interest of this announcement also includes improving the healthcare and well-being of at-risk survivor populations including minority groups, women exposed while pregnant or of reproductive age, the elderly, adolescents, and other minor children.Certified-eligible WTC survivors (adults and children) include individuals who lived, worked, went to school, or attended child or adult day care in the¬†New York City (NYC) Disaster Area, as defined in¬†42 CFR 88.1, on September 11, 2001, or in the following days, weeks, or months and those otherwise meeting the eligibility criteria in 42 CFR¬†88.7¬†or¬†88.8¬†who have been identified as eligible for medical monitoring and treatment as described in¬†42 CFR 88.1¬†or¬†88.12(b).In addition to certified-eligible WTC survivors, proposed research can include sampled populations outside the NYC disaster area in Manhattan as far north as 14th Street and in Brooklyn, along with control populations, to identify potential for long-term adverse health effects in less exposed populations.NIOSH/WTC Health Program R21 grants support the early and conceptual stages of research projects that assess the feasibility of novel areas of investigation, with the potential to enhance the effectiveness of treatment and diagnostic practice. Exploratory/Developmental Grants on Lifestyle Medicine Research Related to the World Trade Center Health Program (R21)
NIOSH supports exploratory and developmental research projects (R21) that address issues related to diagnostic or treatment uncertainty with respect to individuals receiving monitoring and/or treatment under subtitle B, of the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act of 2010 (Public Law 111‚Äě347, as amended by Public Laws¬†114‚Äě113¬†and¬†116‚Äě59). Enrolled WTC responders and certified-eligible WTC survivors will be included in the research project.Lifestyle medicine is a highly valuable, evidence-informed clinical approach, focused on managing and reversing many of the types of chronic diseases certified as WTC-related health conditions by the WTC Health Program. By focusing on sustainable health behaviors and lifestyle factors (including six pillars: nutrition and diet, sleep hygiene, stress management and positive psychology, physical activity, social connectedness, and avoidance of substance misuse), lifestyle medicine has the potential to limit disease progression; to prevent development of additional chronic diseases; and to improve health outcomes, overall member well-being, quality of life, and member satisfaction with the Program.To establish the scope of the WTC Health Program FY2023 lifestyle medicine research, NIOSH seeks to achieve a suitable mix of projects and interventions focusing on sustainable health behaviors and the lifestyle factors described above. Development and Characterization of Experimental models of post-TBI ADRD (R01 - Clinical Trial Not Allowed)
Goal is to have experimental models that can accurately reproduce neuropathological signatures and clinically relevant neurodegenerative, biochemical and behavioral sequelae as those seen in human subjects post-TBI AD/ADRDs. The Office of Infectious Disease and HIV/AIDS Policy (OIDP) anticipates funding a linkage to care intervention and evaluation project that demonstrates the effectiveness of streamlined linkage to hepatitis C treatment from settings with high prevalence of hepatitis C. The purpose of this initiative under the Public Health Service Evaluation Fund is to implement and evaluate hepatitis C community navigation and linkage to care interventions. Interventions of interest are those that are likely to improve hepatitis C treatment rates, reduce transmission, reduce hepatitis C disparities, and reduce hepatitis C-related liver cancer and mortality among people who are disproportionately impacted by viral hepatitis. Examples of settings with high prevalence of hepatitis C may include correctional settings or harm reduction programs. Recipients will work with community partners to implement and evaluate interventions and develop resources for dissemination to diverse stakeholders.
